Creating a Simple Budget Worksheet

Do you know where you stand each month? If you’re like many, you don’t. So many adults live paycheck to paycheck and never really sit down and figure out their income and expenses.

If I asked you how much money you spend, on average, each month, could you tell me? Could you tell me how much you spend on food each month?

Don’t feel bad if you answered no or just guessed. Most of us do this. And it’s one reason why many don’t get ahead in life.

You probably already know that a budget is way to manage your income and expenses. It’s a planning mechanism.

Budget Worksheet

Below, I’ve included a simple budget worksheet. While there are many programs to help you accomplish budgeting, I wanted to show you how easy it is to get a handle on your finances right now.

  Month 1 Month 2 Month 3 3-Month Average
INCOME
Paycheck $5000 $5400 $5200 $5200
Other sources (list them here) 0 0 0 0

Total income $5000 $5400 $5200 $5200

Fixed Expenses
Housing $2000 $2000 $2000 $2000
Utilities $500 $740 $330 $523.33
Auto Payments $440 $440 $440 $440
Auto Insurance $200 $200 $200 $200
Investing/Savings $200 $200 $200 $200
Other sources (list them here)

Flexible Expenses
Groceries $500 $440 $600 $513.33
Dining Out $0 $100 $20 $40
Gas $100 $200 $174 $158
Entertainment $50 $10 $80 $50
Other sources (list them here)

Total Expenses $3990 $4330 $4044 $4121.33

By spending a few minutes here and there, you can start to see your true financial picture. Granted, if you’re a business owner or investor, this budget worksheet is a bit too simplified.

Budget Today

Don’t wait until tomorrow. Start right now. It’s not good enough to know that you’ll make it through the month.

I bet when you start going over everything you spend money on, you’ll find all sorts of ways to cut expenses and invest more. And yes, you should be investing. Each month you should be taking something—anything—and putting it to work for you.

Many don’t want to see what they’re spending. As a result, they lose money month after month. If you’re afraid to look at the cost, you shouldn’t be spending the money.

By taking command of your personal finances today, you’ll be building a happier life for tomorrow.
